How It All Began: The KeyplayMusic Story 🎶

🎹 "Music has always been my compass, guiding me through life’s twists and turns. But the true spark for KeyplayMusic came from a mix of my own journey, my passion for teaching, and the joy of seeing kids discover music in new ways."


It all started with a fascination for connections—how music literacy and traditional literacy overlap. While studying Early Childhood Education, I delved into the idea of "part-to-whole" versus "whole-to-part" learning. Traditional music lessons often focus on the whole—learning a piece first. But what about the parts? What about the "phonics of music"—the rhythm, groove, interval training, and visualizing music theory? I realized there was a gap waiting to be filled.


And then, the "aha!" moment hit during my daughter’s art class. Her teacher introduced kids to modern and famous artists, then guided them to create their own inspired works. It was genius. I thought, Could I do this with music? Could I use legendary songs to inspire kids, teaching them the building blocks of music while fostering their creativity


That’s how the dream of KeyplayMusic was born: a keyboard curriculum that combines visualization, groove, lead sheet reading, songwriting, and pop music-inspired learning. It’s a way to connect kids with the joy of music while giving them the tools to express themselves.

The Journey

My journey with music began when my mom enrolled me in Suzuki piano lessons as a kid. With a knack for picking up songs by ear, I loved making music, even as I struggled with the more traditional aspects like reading sheet music. In college, I discovered the freedom of improvisation through jazz and jam bands, where I fell in love with music as a way to communicate without words.

But I also know what it’s like to feel like you don’t quite fit into traditional music training. That’s why I’ve spent my career creating musical spaces where kids feel empowered, supported, and inspired.

Training

📚 Along the way, I’ve taught in classrooms, online, and in private lessons. I’ve studied pedagogy extensively—earning certifications in Suzuki Piano, Music Together, and early childhood education—and I’ve brought this knowledge into crafting engaging lessons that make learning music fun and approachable.

Belief

KeyplayMusic is a reflection of my belief that music is for everyone. Whether your child is just beginning their journey or diving into songwriting and groove, my goal is to help them see music not just as a skill, but as a joy-filled adventure.
